Tour Overview:

While most visitors chase the Big Five in the famous parks, Tanzania's smaller cats and secretive predators remain one of the country's best-kept wildlife secrets. The Serval Wildlife Day Trip takes you into the mosaic habitats — marshes, grasslands, and acacia woodland — where Tanzania's mid-sized and smaller predators thrive undisturbed.

Your specialist guide knows exactly where and when to look: the reed beds at dawn where servals hunt, the rocky kopjes favoured by caracal, the termite mounds that monitor lizards patrol, and the skies above that harbour bateleurs, fish eagles, and rollers. This is a trip for wildlife enthusiasts who want to look beyond the obvious — and be genuinely surprised by what Tanzania hides in plain sight.

Highlights: Serval & Caracal Spotting Expert Wildlife Guide Over 100 Bird Species Wetland & Savannah Habitats Dawn Game Drive Photography Opportunities
Tanzania's Most Elusive Cat

The serval is Tanzania's most graceful small predator — tall, long-legged, spotted, and breathtakingly fast. They hunt at dawn and dusk in tall grassland and wetland margins, leaping two metres into the air to pluck birds from the sky. Sightings are reliably good on this route.

Specialist Wildlife Guide

Your guide specialises in smaller predators and birds — the kind of wildlife knowledge that most standard safari drivers simply don't have. Expect detailed natural history commentary, sharp eyes for the easily-missed, and a genuine passion for Tanzania's less-celebrated wildlife.

Exceptional Birding

The habitats visited on this trip host an extraordinary variety of birds — raptors, kingfishers, bee-eaters, herons, storks, sunbirds, and more. Even non-birders find themselves astonished by the colour and activity around the wetland edges at first light.

Outstanding Photography

The morning light on open grassland and wetland edge is ideal for photography. Your guide is patient with photographers and understands how to position the vehicle for the best light and angle — this is a trip where you'll come home with shots you're genuinely proud of.

Is this tour right for me?

Trip Type:
Private Group
A private, guided wildlife day trip for nature enthusiasts, photographers, and birders. The pace is unhurried — this is not a tick-list rush but a patient, rewarding exploration of Tanzania's lesser-seen wildlife.
Best Time to Go:
Year-round. Dry seasons (June–October and January–February) offer the best visibility in open grassland. The short rains (November) bring spectacular birding as migrants arrive. Dawn starts are essential for serval sightings regardless of season.
Physical Rating:
Easy
This is a vehicle-based game drive — no trekking required. A short optional walk (30–45 minutes, flat terrain) is offered at the wetland area. Suitable for all fitness levels including young children and older travellers.
Group Size:
2–8 people. Smaller groups have a significant advantage for wildlife spotting and photography. Solo travellers are welcome.
Meals Included:
A packed bush breakfast and lunch box are included, enjoyed at a scenic spot in the field. Drinking water and soft drinks are provided throughout the day.

Why early: Servals are most active at dawn

Your guide arrives at your hotel before sunrise — the early start is non-negotiable for wildlife. Servals, like most small cats, are crepuscular: their most active window is the hour before and after sunrise, when they move through tall grass and wetland margins hunting francolins, frogs, and rodents.

The drive out of Arusha in the pre-dawn darkness is atmospheric — the city still quiet, the sky beginning to lighten, and Kilimanjaro emerging from the night sky as you head south.

Dawn Game Drive — Serval & Grassland Wildlife
Serval cat hunting at dawn
Target Species: Serval, Mongoose, Jackal
Habitat: Tall grassland & wetland margins
Duration: ~2.5 hours

The first light is the magic hour. Your guide drives slowly along the wetland margins and open grassland tracks, scanning ahead with binoculars and reading the signs — rippling grass, disturbed birds, the flick of a long-spotted tail. Serval sightings on this route are reliably good, and your guide knows the specific hunting grounds these cats return to morning after morning.

Other grassland and wetland species likely to be seen during this window include black-backed jackal, dwarf and banded mongoose, reedbuck, waterbuck, and a dazzling array of raptors — bateleur, martial eagle, augur buzzard — riding the warming thermals as the day begins.

Bush Breakfast & Birding Walk
Birds at a Tanzania wetland
Meal: Bush Breakfast
Activity: Optional guided birding walk
Duration: ~1 hour

You stop at a shaded spot beside the wetland for a packed bush breakfast. After eating, your guide leads an optional short walk along the water's edge — this is prime territory for kingfishers, herons, storks, jacanas, and waders, and the proximity to the water allows for photography at a much closer range than is possible from the vehicle.

Acacia Woodland — Caracal & Smaller Predators
Acacia woodland savannah Tanzania
Target Species: Caracal, Genet, Civet
Habitat: Acacia woodland & rocky kopjes
Duration: ~2 hours

As the mid-morning sun heats the grasslands, your guide moves into the dappled shade of acacia woodland and the rocky outcrops where caracal — Tanzania's most spectacular medium-sized cat — rest during the day. Caracal are uncommonly seen on standard safaris; knowing where to look makes the difference.

The woodland also produces genet, civet (identifiable by their distinctive tracks), dwarf mongoose colonies around termite mounds, and an excellent supporting cast of woodland birds — hornbills, starlings, barbets, and cuckoos calling from the canopy.

Lunch is eaten at a shaded picnic spot with views across the plains — a genuinely memorable setting. The afternoon drive covers the wetland margins a second time as activity picks up again before dusk, and your guide makes a final sweep of known serval territories before the return journey begins.
