Serval Wildlife Day Trip
While most visitors chase the Big Five in the famous parks, Tanzania's smaller cats and secretive predators remain one of the country's best-kept wildlife secrets. The Serval Wildlife Day Trip takes you into the mosaic habitats — marshes, grasslands, and acacia woodland — where Tanzania's mid-sized and smaller predators thrive undisturbed.
Your specialist guide knows exactly where and when to look: the reed beds at dawn where servals hunt, the rocky kopjes favoured by caracal, the termite mounds that monitor lizards patrol, and the skies above that harbour bateleurs, fish eagles, and rollers. This is a trip for wildlife enthusiasts who want to look beyond the obvious — and be genuinely surprised by what Tanzania hides in plain sight.
The serval is Tanzania's most graceful small predator — tall, long-legged, spotted, and breathtakingly fast. They hunt at dawn and dusk in tall grassland and wetland margins, leaping two metres into the air to pluck birds from the sky. Sightings are reliably good on this route.
Your guide specialises in smaller predators and birds — the kind of wildlife knowledge that most standard safari drivers simply don't have. Expect detailed natural history commentary, sharp eyes for the easily-missed, and a genuine passion for Tanzania's less-celebrated wildlife.
The habitats visited on this trip host an extraordinary variety of birds — raptors, kingfishers, bee-eaters, herons, storks, sunbirds, and more. Even non-birders find themselves astonished by the colour and activity around the wetland edges at first light.
The morning light on open grassland and wetland edge is ideal for photography. Your guide is patient with photographers and understands how to position the vehicle for the best light and angle — this is a trip where you'll come home with shots you're genuinely proud of.

Your Day, Hour by Hour
Your guide arrives at your hotel before sunrise — the early start is non-negotiable for wildlife. Servals, like most small cats, are crepuscular: their most active window is the hour before and after sunrise, when they move through tall grass and wetland margins hunting francolins, frogs, and rodents.
The drive out of Arusha in the pre-dawn darkness is atmospheric — the city still quiet, the sky beginning to lighten, and Kilimanjaro emerging from the night sky as you head south.
The first light is the magic hour. Your guide drives slowly along the wetland margins and open grassland tracks, scanning ahead with binoculars and reading the signs — rippling grass, disturbed birds, the flick of a long-spotted tail. Serval sightings on this route are reliably good, and your guide knows the specific hunting grounds these cats return to morning after morning.
Other grassland and wetland species likely to be seen during this window include black-backed jackal, dwarf and banded mongoose, reedbuck, waterbuck, and a dazzling array of raptors — bateleur, martial eagle, augur buzzard — riding the warming thermals as the day begins.
You stop at a shaded spot beside the wetland for a packed bush breakfast. After eating, your guide leads an optional short walk along the water's edge — this is prime territory for kingfishers, herons, storks, jacanas, and waders, and the proximity to the water allows for photography at a much closer range than is possible from the vehicle.
As the mid-morning sun heats the grasslands, your guide moves into the dappled shade of acacia woodland and the rocky outcrops where caracal — Tanzania's most spectacular medium-sized cat — rest during the day. Caracal are uncommonly seen on standard safaris; knowing where to look makes the difference.
The woodland also produces genet, civet (identifiable by their distinctive tracks), dwarf mongoose colonies around termite mounds, and an excellent supporting cast of woodland birds — hornbills, starlings, barbets, and cuckoos calling from the canopy.
Lunch is eaten at a shaded picnic spot with views across the plains — a genuinely memorable setting. The afternoon drive covers the wetland margins a second time as activity picks up again before dusk, and your guide makes a final sweep of known serval territories before the return journey begins.
Your guide returns you to your hotel in Arusha or Moshi as the afternoon light softens. You leave with photographs, a wildlife checklist, and a new appreciation for the hidden depth of Tanzania's incredible natural world.
From Arusha into the wetlands and grasslands where Tanzania's smaller cats hunt, and back before sunset.
