Chemka Hot Springs Day Trip
Tucked away in a jungle ravine on the lower slopes of Kilimanjaro, Chemka Hot Springs — also known as Kikuletwa Hot Springs — are among Tanzania's most extraordinary natural secrets. Fed by underground geothermal springs, the waters maintain a constant warm temperature year-round, filtered to a startling clarity through volcanic rock. The pool is rimmed by ancient fig trees whose roots plunge dramatically into the water, and the whole setting feels more like something from a fairy tale than a real place.
This day trip from Moshi or Arusha takes you off the tourist trail entirely. You'll spend the heart of the day swimming, floating, snorkelling, and relaxing in this beautiful natural oasis, with a traditional lunch served at the springs' edge. It is one of the most joyful and restorative day trips in northern Tanzania — and one that most visitors to the region never discover.
The springs maintain a temperature of around 30°C year-round — warm enough to be utterly relaxing, cool enough to swim in for hours. The visibility through the water is exceptional — you can see clearly to the white sandy bottom several metres below, and the fish that inhabit the pool are completely unafraid of swimmers.
The ancient fig trees overhanging the pool — some of them centuries old — create one of the most beautiful natural swimming environments on the continent. Their root systems cascade into the water, forming natural handholds and diving platforms, and the dappled light through the canopy is magical at midday.
The final section of the approach to Chemka follows a track across open Maasai steppe — a landscape of golden grass, red-robed herders, and wide skies — adding a genuine sense of remoteness and discovery to the journey. Weekday visits are particularly quiet.
The pool has shallow areas ideal for children and non-swimmers, and deeper sections for confident swimmers. Snorkelling masks and basic flotation aids are available at the springs. This is one of the few Tanzania day trips that works equally well for young children, older travellers, and serious swimmers.

Your Day, Hour by Hour
Your guide collects you from your hotel in Moshi and heads south and west across the wide open Maasai steppe — a landscape of flat-topped acacia, red dust, and Maasai herders moving livestock across the plains with Kilimanjaro rising behind you. The transition from town to bush happens fast, and the drive itself is a genuine part of the experience.
The final section follows a dirt track across open plain before dipping into the ravine where Chemka's figs and jungle wait — the contrast between the dry steppe and the lush oasis is dramatic and beautiful.
The moment of arrival at Chemka is one of those travel memories that stays with you: you push through the bush and suddenly the springs open up before you — impossibly clear, fringed by the giant aerial roots of ancient figs, fed by a constant gentle upwelling from deep below. The water is warm enough to slip into immediately and so clear that you can see every detail of the sandy bottom.
Spend the morning swimming, floating, snorkelling, or simply watching the resident fish investigate you from below. The springs' edges have natural shallow alcoves for children and non-swimmers, and the deeper central pool for confident swimmers. The fig tree roots are perfect for holding onto, resting, and jumping from.
A traditional Tanzanian lunch is served in the shade beside the water — rice, beans, vegetable stew, and seasonal fruit, with fresh drinking water and juice. It's a genuinely lovely setting for a meal: the sound of the springs, the dappled light through the fig canopy, and the pleasant exhaustion of a morning in the water.
The afternoon is yours — more swimming, floating, photography, or simply lying in the shade with the springs murmuring beside you. The afternoon light through the fig canopy is spectacular for photography. Your guide is on hand throughout if you have questions about the environment or local history.
The drive back retraces the route across the steppe as the afternoon light turns golden — often the best light of the day for photographing Kilimanjaro. You return to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha relaxed, refreshed, and with a secret to share: that Tanzania hides something this beautiful just ninety minutes from the city.
From Moshi across the Maasai steppe to a hidden jungle oasis — and back in time for dinner.
