The Three Safari Tiers

Tanzania safaris span an enormous price range, and the difference usually comes down to accommodation style, vehicle exclusivity, and how remote (and therefore how exclusive) your camps are — not the quality of the wildlife viewing itself, which can be superb at every tier.

Wildlife viewing quality doesn't necessarily track with price — budget and luxury travellers often see the same animals on the same plains.

What's Usually Included (and What Isn't)

  • Usually included: park & conservation fees, accommodation, all meals while on safari, a guide, the safari vehicle and fuel, and road transfers between parks.
  • Usually not included: international flights, visa fees, travel insurance, gratuities for guides and camp staff, alcoholic drinks, and optional add-ons like hot-air balloon safaris.
Get Exclusions in Writing

Always ask your operator for a written, itemised list of inclusions and exclusions before booking. "All-inclusive" means different things to different companies, and surprise charges are far more common with budget operators cutting corners than with reputable mid-range and luxury ones.

Park Fees & Government Charges

Each national park and conservation area charges its own daily conservation fee per person, plus separate charges for vehicles in some areas. These fees are set and periodically revised by the Tanzanian government, so treat any figure you read (including here) as indicative rather than current — your operator will always quote the fees in effect at time of travel.

  • Fees are generally higher for parks with the highest demand and conservation costs, such as the Serengeti and Ngorongoro.
  • Ngorongoro Conservation Area additionally levies a crater service fee for vehicles descending to the floor.
  • Children typically pay a reduced rate, and East African residents pay substantially less than international visitors at most parks.

Hidden Costs to Budget For

  • Internal flights vs driving: Flying between parks saves time but typically costs more than road transfers.
  • Hot-air balloon safaris: A popular add-on over the Serengeti, usually priced separately per person.
  • Single supplement: Solo travellers should expect a surcharge for a single room or tent at most camps.
  • Gratuities: Tipping guides, drivers, and camp staff is customary and adds up over a multi-day trip — budget for it in advance.
  • Bottled water & drinks: Often charged separately at lodges, even when meals are included.

How to Save Without Compromising the Experience

  • Travel in the shoulder season (June or late October, for example) for rates that are noticeably lower than peak July–September pricing, with similar wildlife viewing.
  • Join a shared group vehicle rather than booking a private one, if you don't mind travelling alongside other guests.
  • Mix accommodation styles — a few nights of comfortable camping paired with one or two lodge nights stretches a budget further than an all-luxury itinerary.
  • Choose fewer parks for longer rather than rushing between many in a short trip — this also reduces transfer costs and travel fatigue.
  • Book directly with a local operator rather than through multiple layers of international resellers, which typically reduces overall cost.
Value Isn't Always About Price

A well-run mid-range safari with an excellent guide often delivers a more memorable trip than a rushed luxury itinerary with a generic one. Ask prospective operators about their guides' experience — it matters more than the thread count of the sheets.
