Arusha National Park Day Trip
Often overlooked in favour of more famous parks, Arusha National Park is one of Tanzania's most rewarding and accessible day trips — and one of its best-kept secrets. Just 30 minutes from Arusha city, the park packs extraordinary diversity into a compact area: the reed-fringed Momella Lakes, draped in flamingos and waterfowl; dense montane forest alive with black-and-white colobus monkeys and blue monkeys; and the sweeping grasslands at the foot of Mount Meru, where buffalo, giraffe, warthog, and zebra roam freely.
This full-day private safari takes you through all of Arusha National Park's distinct ecosystems in a single day — forest canopy, open savanna, and lakeside — accompanied by a knowledgeable naturalist guide in a private 4×4 Land Cruiser. Optional canoeing on Momella Lakes is available for a closer look at the birdlife and hippos from the water. No other national park in Tanzania is this close to a major city, or this surprisingly wild.
Arusha National Park is one of the best places in East Africa to see black-and-white colobus monkeys in their natural montane forest habitat, alongside blue monkeys and olive baboons.
Seven shallow alkaline lakes, each a different shade of blue and green, host thousands of flamingos along with pelicans, herons, and a huge variety of wading birds — a photographer's paradise.
Africa's fifth-highest peak rises dramatically behind every game drive, its forested slopes and volcanic crater providing a stunning backdrop for wildlife sightings that you won't find in any other Tanzanian park.
One of only a handful of parks in Tanzania where you can leave the vehicle and take to the water. A guided canoe on Momella Lakes brings you silently alongside hippos, waterfowl, and the flamingo flocks at water level.

Your Day, Hour by Hour
Your guide collects you from your Arusha hotel in a private 4×4 Land Cruiser. The drive to the park takes less than 40 minutes — short enough that you can afford a slightly later start than most Tanzania safaris.
As the town gives way to farmland and then forest, Mount Meru's forested cone begins to dominate the skyline ahead. You arrive at Momella Gate, complete entry formalities, and enter the park as the morning mist burns off the Momella Lakes below.
The first stop is the montane forest zone, where troops of black-and-white colobus monkeys — Tanzania's most spectacular primates outside of the great apes — crash through the canopy overhead. Blue monkeys, olive baboons, and bushbuck are common in the undergrowth below.
Your guide then navigates to the rim of the Ngurdoto Crater — a collapsed volcanic caldera whose steep sides protect an undisturbed ecosystem below. Buffalo, waterbuck, and warthog graze the crater floor; entry is not permitted, so you observe from the forest rim above, with the whole scene framed by ancient fig trees.
The drive loops through the seven Momella Lakes — shallow, alkaline waters that glow pink with flamingos and attract pelicans, African spoonbills, herons, storks, and dozens of duck species. Hippos wallow at the lake margins, occasionally surfacing with a snort. The views across the water toward Kilimanjaro on a clear morning are among the most photogenic in East Africa.
A generous packed lunch is enjoyed at one of the park's designated picnic areas overlooking the Momella Lakes, with Mount Meru towering behind you. Waterbirds pick their way along the shoreline just metres away while you eat.
The afternoon takes you out onto the open grasslands of the Serengeti Ndogo (Little Serengeti) area, where Masai giraffe, Cape buffalo, zebra, and warthog graze freely against the dramatic backdrop of Mount Meru. Unlike many of Tanzania's larger parks, you often have entire areas to yourselves here — a genuinely private-feeling wildlife experience just minutes from a city.
You exit the park by mid-afternoon — early enough to catch an evening flight, enjoy a sundowner in Arusha, or prepare for an onward safari. You'll be dropped back at your hotel or transferred to Kilimanjaro Airport, having experienced one of Tanzania's finest underrated parks.
A round trip from Arusha city through forest, crater, lakes, and savanna — all back in time for dinner.
